Museum of Maritime Arts

Asylum – Museum of Maritime Arts brings together memory, innovation and participation, reinterpreting the very meaning of the building that hosts it: the name in fact recalls the ancient role of the asylum as a place of welcome, learning and growth, turning this legacy into a new space devoted to culture, knowledge and community. 

The challenge is to tell the seafaring tradition through contemporary languages and innovative tools, integrating environmental education, immersive installations, community participation and the collection of local testimonies, making cultural heritage a living, shared experience. In this perspective, the museum takes shape as a cultural and social hub, able to host temporary exhibitions, workshops, educational activities, immersive installations and moments of community gathering.

Together, we are building a legacy of sustainability, innovation and cultural vitality, a legacy that invites everyone to be part of a brighter and greener future” Green Cultural Oases (EUI02-223) is an innovative action funded by the European Urban Initiative (EUI-IA), led by the Municipality of Elliniko-Argyroupolis (Greece) as lead partner. The project pursues a pioneering and proactive approach to sustainable urban tourism planning, combining environmental sustainability, cultural diversity and digital innovation to foster a resilient, inclusive and long-term oriented tourism ecosystem. The Municipality of Milazzo participates as a transfer partner, convinced that the innovative solutions developed in Elliniko-Argyroupolis can be successfully adapted and transferred to its own area. This collaboration aims to reposition Milazzo as an experiential, sustainable and digitally innovative tourist destination, while also addressing concrete local challenges. Along this path, Asylum – Museum of Maritime Arts is set as the project’s physical hub: the museum spaces provide the physically coherent and thematically structured context through which to transfer and adapt to the Milazzo area GreCO’s operational mechanisms, which will be progressively refined in direct contact with the local community and its visitors. Within the GreCO project, Asylum thus becomes a connection point between culture, environment and community, contributing to the creation of an urban space where memory, education and innovation can coexist and generate new opportunities for knowledge, participation and enhancement of the area.

Asylum – Museum of Maritime Arts was created with the aim of turning cultural heritage into a living, dynamic and shared experience. Through immersive installations, educational activities, the collection of local testimonies and routes dedicated to environmental sustainability, the museum tells the deep bond between Milazzo and the sea using contemporary and innovative languages. More than an exhibition venue, the museum aims to be a space for meeting, knowledge and sharing, able to connect culture, environment and community, creating new opportunities for participation and enhancement of the area.

THE “CALCAGNO” NURSERY SCHOOL

The Calcagno Infant School is a place of great historical and symbolic value. Conceived in the late nineteenth century and completed in 1903, the building was erected at the initiative of Senator Giuseppe Calcagno (1818–1903), in order to provide a service for the children of the working-class district of Vaccarella, inhabited mainly by fishing families. The structure, however, was never used as a real nursery school: in 1908 it took in the wounded from the Messina earthquake, while between the late 1920s and the early 1930s it would host the heliomarine colony for frail and needy children, with the aim of preventing diseases such as tuberculosis. After this brief experience, the elegant building fell into abandonment and was used by fishermen as an improvised storehouse for fishing nets and other “tools of the trade”. Some of them would sit on the entrance steps to discuss the catch and the rema (the sea current) or to mend the fishing nets. In 2022, the Department for Infrastructure and Mobility, Technical Department of the Sicilian Region, funded the restoration, enhancement and redevelopment works on the property, intended to become the Museum of Maritime Arts.

THE EAGLE AND THE SEA IN THE COAT OF ARMS OF MILAZZO 

In the coat of arms of the city of Milazzo appears an eagle above the sea: a powerful image, tied to the memory of a decisive event that took place in these very waters. In 36 BC, off the coast of the city, Octavian Augustus’ fleet — led by Admiral Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa — defeated that of Sextus Pompey, marking a key step toward the birth of the Roman Empire. According to tradition, the eagle — symbol of Roman power — was linked to the city of Milazzo precisely to commemorate this victory.
